Job Description
1. Team Leadership & People Development
- Lead, manage, and develop the R&D team to achieve departmental objectives.
- Plan and allocate manpower based on project workload and business priorities.
- Recruit, coach, train, and evaluate team members.
- Define job descriptions, KPIs, and performance objectives for the R&D team.
- Collaborate with the HR team to build a professional, collaborative, and engaging working environment.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
2. Research & Product Development
- Lead and oversee new product development (NPD) projects from concept to production launch.
- Ensure all R&D projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet quality standards.
- Coordinate product handover to the Production team, including:
- Manufacturing process
- Packaging process
- Risk assessment and mitigation plans
- Product specifications
- Quality standards
- Technical documentation
- Research new materials, technologies, and manufacturing methods to improve product quality and competitiveness.
- Continuously evaluate alternative materials and production solutions to reduce costs while maintaining quality, safety, and customer requirements.
- Monitor market trends, competitors, and industry innovations to identify new development opportunities.
- Ensure proper storage and management of samples and R&D materials.
3. Cost Optimization
- Analyze product development costs, including:
- Raw materials
- Manufacturing processes
- Packaging
- Defect rates
- Rework costs
- Propose cost reduction initiatives without compromising product quality.
- Review product costing before submission to the Sales team or customers.
- Support cross-functional teams in improving manufacturing efficiency and product profitability.
4. Process Management & Cross-functional Collaboration
- Develop and standardize R&D workflows, documentation, and reporting systems.
- Build effective communication channels between R&D, Production, Sales, Management, Suppliers, and Customers.
- Establish document control procedures and maintain technical documentation.
- Evaluate suppliers based on quality, pricing, delivery performance, and technical capability before recommending them to the Supply Chain team.
- Implement and maintain 5S standards within the R&D department.
- Prepare and manage the department's annual budget.
- Promote innovation by encouraging new ideas and validating improvements through pilot testing before mass production.

Education
- Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Product Development, Quality Management, or related disciplines.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an R&D Manager or equivalent leadership position.
- Experience in handicrafts, home décor, traditional products, premium or luxury consumer goods is highly preferred.
- Proven experience managing New Product Development (NPD) projects.
