Data Model/ETL Engineer – Healthcare Software Development

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Model/ETL Engineer to support the design, development, and optimization of healthcare data pipelines and data models for a critical healthcare software development initiative. You will play a key role in building and maintaining scalable and high-performance data infrastructure, ensuring data quality, compliance, and accessibility across the platform.

This role requires strong experience in healthcare data standards (such as HL7, FHIR, EDI, or claims data), along with solid expertise in ETL development and data modeling best practices.

Key Responsibilities
• Design and validate logical and physical database schemas following best practices.
• Ensure data models align with FHIR resources in collaboration with FHIR/HL7 SMEs.
• Translate clinical, administrative, and billing workflows into robust database structures.
• Partner with application developers to maintain consistency between code-first entities and database schemas.
• Define and implement ETL strategies for data migration from legacy HIS/LIS/RIS/EMR systems.
• Map legacy data structures to FHIR-aligned models and validate transformation rules.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, and reconciliation throughout migration processes.
• Optimize database performance through indexing, partitioning, caching, and query tuning.
• Provide input on API data access patterns for performance and maintainability.
• Establish and enforce data governance, security, and compliance practices.
• Document data models, ETL workflows, and migration strategies clearly and consistently.
• Develop and maintain ETL pipelines for batch and near-real-time data processing.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, PHI, and other healthcare regulatory requirements.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field.
• 6+ years of experience in database architecture and data engineering.
• Strong expertise in relational data modeling and schema design.
• Hands-on experience with SQL Server, including performance tuning and optimization.
• Proven experience designing and implementing ETL pipelines (SSIS or equivalent tools).
• Experience with healthcare data migration projects.
• Familiarity with FHIR data models and aligning relational schemas with FHIR resources.
• Experience working with cloud-native databases and data platforms (e.g., Azure SQL).
• Knowledge of healthcare terminologies such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD-10, CPT is a plus.
• Strong collaboration, documentation, and communication skills.
• Prior experience in large-scale HIS/EMR implementations or migrations is an advantage.
• Experience with API integrations and batch or streaming data processing is a plus.
